How to Study for the CNA Written Exam in 30 Days

California CNA exam content, question counts, timing, and eligibility follow current state and testing-vendor guidance. Use the official handbook and a CNA-Ready simulation to plan your study.

Week 1: Foundations (Days 1–7)

  • Days 1–2: Module 1 (Foundations) + Module 2 (Communication). Read every lesson, do the flashcards, take the quiz at the end.
  • Days 3–4: Module 3 (Infection Control) — this is the most tested content area on the written exam. Know hand hygiene, PPE order, Standard Precautions cold.
  • Days 5–6: Module 4 (Safety & Body Mechanics) — body mechanics, fall prevention, call lights, restraints.
  • Day 7: Review quiz — take a 30-question practice quiz on everything from week 1. Note every wrong answer.

Week 2: Resident Care (Days 8–14)

  • Days 8–9: Module 5 (Resident Rights) + Module 6 (Personal Care). Dignity, privacy, abuse reporting.
  • Days 10–11: Module 7 (Vital Signs) + Module 8 (Nutrition & Elimination). Know normal ranges for all vital signs.
  • Days 12–13: Module 9 (Mobility) + clinical skills. ROM, transfers, positioning — practice the steps out loud.
  • Day 14: Full 50-question practice quiz. Track your score by content area using the Readiness Dashboard.

Week 3: Advanced Content (Days 15–21)

  • Days 15–16: Module 10 (Dementia & Alzheimer's) — validation therapy, wandering, behaviors. High-frequency exam content.
  • Days 17–18: Module 11 (Mental Health & End-of-Life) + Module 12 (Emergency Procedures).
  • Days 19–20: Module 13–17 (Rehab, Documentation, Body Systems, Long-term Care, Weights & Measures).
  • Day 21: Charting trainer session + documentation review. The written exam includes documentation scenarios.

Week 4: Exam Simulation (Days 22–30)

  • Days 22–25: Take a full CNA-Ready timed simulation each day. Review every wrong answer with rationales; official question counts and timing vary by state and vendor.
  • Days 26–28: Focus on your two weakest content areas from the readiness dashboard. Use adaptive quiz mode.
  • Day 29: Light review only. Flashcards on infection control and resident rights. No cramming.
  • Day 30: Exam day. Trust the process.

A skill learners often overlook

Reading rationales. Every wrong answer has an explanation. Students who read every rationale — even on questions they got right — pass at dramatically higher rates. The CNA-Ready AI Tutor can also explain any concept in plain language when you're stuck.
